New Writing Workshops announced to support early career scholars in the Global South

The British Academy has announced 20 writing workshops awards to support the development of promising early career scholars in the Global South.

Funded by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), through the Global Challenges Research Fund, the workshops are designed to strengthen the research capacity of early career scholars in the Global South and promote the uptake of research emanating from developing countries in international journals.

Through the Writing Workshop programme, the British Academy seeks to cultivate professional networks and mentorship, encouraging and supporting early career researchers based in developing countries to develop long-term connections and collaborations with academics and journal editors based in the UK and elsewhere.

The new cohort of award-holders is based in 54 universities in the UK and overseas, with writing workshops taking place in 20 different countries across the Global South.

The award-holders include:

• Dr Mehair Kathem, University College London, in collaboration with Dr Sara Camacho-Felix (London School of Economics and Political Science), Dr Jaafar Jotheri (University of Al-Qadisiyah), Dr Rozhen Mohammed-Amin (Sulimani Polytechnic University) and Professor Eleanor Robson (University College London) – workshops to be held in Iraq


• Professor Jack Corbett, University of Southampton, in collaboration with Professor Delihna Ehmes (College of Micronesia-FSM), Dr Gonzaga Puas (Micronesian Institute for Research and Development) and Dr Roannie Ng Shiu (Australian National University) – workshops to be held in the Federated States of Micronesia


• Professor Karin Barber, London School of Economics and Political Science, in collaboration with Dr Carli Coetzee (International African Institute), Dr Divine Fuh (CODESRIA), Stephanie Kitchen (International African Institute) and Professor Grace Ahingula Musila (University of the Witwatersrand) – workshops to be held in Ghana and Ethiopia


• Dr Zerrin Özlem Biner, University of Kent, in collaboration with Dr Başak Ertür (Birkbeck University of London) and Professor Leyla Neyzi (Sabanci University) – workshops to be held in Turkey.
