Dr Mark Harris, Lecturer in Social Anthropology at the University of St Andrews, uses two forms of ethnographic writing to explore the historical and social identity of a village of fisherpeople who live in Parú on the banks of the Amazon. He intersperses analytical chapters with narrative sections that describe more freely what people do and how they do it. In these edited extracts, he considers the importance of kinship.
