Route 1: Senior appointments

Route 1 for the Global Talent visa is for individuals who have been appointed to an eligible senior academic or research position at an approved UK higher education institution (HEI) or research institute, provided certain recruitment requirements were met.

Eligible senior positions are Professor, Associate Professor, Reader, or equivalent positions such as Senior Group Leader. This route is administered by the British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering and Royal Society.

The list of institutions eligible under the senior appointments route was last updated on 6 August 2020.

Endorsement application

To apply for endorsement under this route, you must select the relevant ‘fast-track’ option on the stage one (endorsement) application form and provide a Statement of Guarantee from the Director of Human Resources or equivalent at the appointing HEI or eligible research institute. It should be dated, signed and presented on headed paper and confirm that the recruitment process for your appointment met the following criteria:

  • that the employing organisation is a UK HEI or research institute on the list of eligible organisations available below;
  • that the job was advertised and an open competition was held for the position (applications where there was not an open competition may be considered providing all other criteria are met and a reasonable explanation is provided for that decision);
  • that a job offer of an eligible senior academic or research position at the host institution has been made and accepted (please specify the position and department). (Eligible senior positions are Professor, Associate Professor, Reader, or equivalent position such as Senior Group Leader, at a UK HEI or research institute);
  • that at least three references were required and received;
  • at least four senior academic representatives from the host institution were present on the interview panel;
  • that at least one senior external expert in a relevant field, who is not employed by the host institution, was consulted during the recruitment process (either participating in the interview or by providing written input).

You should not provide a copy of a contract as this will not contain all of the required information. Please check carefully that your employing organisation appears on the list of eligible institutions and that your appointment is sufficiently senior. Meeting these requirements means that you can be assured of fast-track endorsement. Individuals being employed by an organisation not on the list, or appointed to a less senior role, may apply through other routes provided they meet the applicable eligibility criteria. Your employing institution may provide you with additional guidance to support your application.
