Jewish Heritage in Chinese Museums and Historical Sites
University of Nottingham, Ningbo China
£1,910
This project examines how Jews and Jewishness in dynastic China (from the Han Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty) are discursively presented in selected Chinese museums and historical sites that focus on China’s Silk Road history. The aims of this exploratory study is to discover if the 20th century Jewish presence in China contrasts with representations of Jews and Jewishness during the Silk Road period, and its effects on heritage-making. As such, the study will help develop the developing field of museology, specifically critical museology, which examines the metanarratives of museums, and how this discourse not only reflects and conveys social ideologies, but also construct knowledge, and the effects of creating and promoting this heritage.
