Global Professorships 2024: frequently asked questions

When is the deadline for application submissions?

The deadline for submitting your application is 17.00 GMT Wednesday 23 October 2024. However, applications should be submitted well in advance of the deadline; we recommend at least five days prior to allow for institutional approval.

When can I expect to hear back about the results?

We aim to have both the successful and unsuccessful applicants informed about the final decisions of the panel by mid-March 2025. Please note this is a provisional date and as such may be subject to change.

How many applicants will be given the award this year?

This year we will be awarding eight individuals across the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Is there a specified number of awards reserved for each discipline (i.e. can only a certain number of awards be given to candidates from the humanities/social sciences)?

There is no limit on how many of these individuals are assigned to a specific discipline – i.e., your success is purely dependant on the merit of your proposal rather than the area of interest.

When does the award begin?

You may begin your award anytime between 26 March and 30 September 2025.

How can I find out about any updates on the programme for this year, or in the future?

If you wish to keep up to date about any announcements on future rounds or further funding opportunities do sign up to our newsletter by filling out the form found through the following link: The British Academy International Newsletter

Am I eligible as long as I am based outside of the UK?

If you are based outside the UK but primarily work for a UK institution, then you are not eligible for the Global Professorship Award. For further details on eligibility please refer to the eligibility criteria listed on the application or get in touch with us via the following email address: [email protected]

Do I need to hold a permanent post at my home institution to be considered eligible?

In order to be eligible for the award, the Applicant must have either a permanent contract, or a fixed term contract which would last the duration of the grant. The British Academy acknowledges that there may be varying circumstances surrounding contract duration. Any exceptions will need to be expressly agreed with the Academy prior to the application being submitted – should you have any queries as to your personal situation, please contact us via [email protected]

Am I eligible to apply while holding Emeritus Status at my home institution?

Individuals holding Emeritus Status are eligible to apply, provided they can demonstrate proof of contract.

Are independent scholars/researchers eligible to apply?

Unfortunately, independent academics are not considered eligible for this scheme.

I am currently a Principal (or Co-Investigator) on another British Academy grant. Am I eligible to apply?

There can be no duplication for funding for the same purpose by more than one British Academy scheme. As the Global Professorship buys out 100% of the Award-holder’s time, any existing award must be completed, and a final report submitted, before the Global Professorship can be taken up.

I was unsuccessful in applying to the Academy in a previous round. Can I apply again?

Yes, an applicant is eligible to re-apply with a revised or different proposal so long as they still meet the eligibility criteria.

I received a Global Professorship Award from the Academy previously – can I apply again if I still comply with eligibility criteria?

No, previous Global Professorship holders are not permitted to submit another application to this scheme.

What style of citations do I need to use, and is a reference list required?

We do not require academic citations to be included in your research proposal; however, it is up to the applicant to decide whether to include this. We do not require reference lists as part of proposals, and it is not possible to upload this separately.

Where can I upload my CV?

We no longer require CVs as part of the application process. In their place you will find questions asking for your key career appointments and published work, as well as the option of providing a personal statement.

Does the Global Professor programme use the Full Economic Costing Model?

The total funding available from the Academy over the four years of the award is up to £900,000. The host institution is not required to provide any additional resource as the programme is not offered using Full Economic Costing.

Will the British Academy put me in contact with a UK institution?

The British Academy is not able to assist with locating or facilitating contact with UK host institutions.
