Focus of this section
This section covers sociology, demography and social statistics, extending to social policy, education and criminology. Sociology itself has several sub-fields, from theoretical to empirical, using either qualitative or quantitative evidence about social relations and their structure. Demography covers the structure and dynamics of population, ranging from studies of processes of family formation, mortality and migration to mathematical modelling. Social statistics advances the methods used to collect and analyse quantitative data on society. Social policy scholars are concerned with the design and effectiveness of welfare state policies. The sociological study of education and criminology (crime and criminal justice) have emerged as distinct fields.
