Medieval Studies

This section brings together Fellows who specialise in medieval studies.

Focus of this section

The medieval studies section is truly inter-disciplinary: it is concerned both with the social, cultural, economic, political and religious history of the medieval world and with its rich Latin and vernacular literature, from the end of the Roman Empire in the west to around 1500, roughly 1000 years of human experience and creativity. The main emphasis of the research of most members lies in Britain, Europe and the Mediterranean, including the Byzantine world, which are studies in all their aspects; musicologists, archaeologists, art historians and historians of the Islamic lands also take part in the activities of the section.
