Africa, Asia and the Middle East

This section brings together Fellows who specialise in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Focus of this section

This is the only one of the British Academy’s sections to be designated by areas of the world, rather than by a particular academic discipline. This means that it brings together language and literature specialists, historians, art historians, experts in the study of religions, anthropologists and political scientists who work on the cultures, histories and societies of different parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. All of the members of this section use their knowledge of the languages of the regions that they study to engage directly with the past histories or contemporary features of the cultures and civilizations that comprise such an important part of the world’s history and of its future.

Section chair

Professor Dawn Chatty FBA

Emeritus Professor of Iranian and Central Asian Studies, SOAS, University of London
