The Academy’s book collection, a large part of which is on display here, showcases the work of Fellows of the British Academy and scholars it has supported through research grants.

As you enter the Reading Room from the Lee Library, you are moving into No. 11 Carlton House Terrace. In 2010, the Academy embarked on an ambitious project to renovate and restore the public rooms in No. 11 and link the two buildings together. The work was completed in 2011, and the Academy now operates the two buildings as a single unit.

Both rooms served as the dining rooms to their respective houses when private residences. In 1924, the Union Club, a private gentleman’s club, took up tenancy in No. 10 and most of No. 11. They opened up both rooms to act as one large dining room for its members.
