Celebrate this year’s shortlisted books and authors of the 2024 British Academy Book Prize.
Now in its 12th year, the prize is awarded to a non-fiction book which contributes to public understanding of world cultures, with previous recipients including Nandini Das, Alia Trabucco Zerán and Sujit Sivasundaram.
Join our shortlisted authors for an exploration of urgent and globally significant topics.
The six shortlisted books and authors are:
- Material World: A Substantial Story of Our Past and Future by Ed Conway
- Smoke and Ashes: Opium's Hidden Histories by Amitav Ghosh
- The Secret Lives of Numbers: A Global History of Mathematics & Its Unsung Trailblazers by Kate Kitagawa and Timothy Revell
- The Tame and the Wild: People and Animals after 1492 by Marcy Norton
- Language City: The Fight to Preserve Endangered Mother Tongues by Ross Perlin
- Divided: Racism, Medicine and Why We Need to Decolonise Healthcare by Annabel Sowemimo
You can find out more about the shortlisted books, and order a copy, via the London Review Bookshop.

This event will take place both in-person at the British Academy's home at 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, St James, London, SW1Y 5AH and will be live-streamed via Vimeo. A link will be sent to online attendees.
In-person audience members can purchase copies of the shortlisted books from the London Review Bookshop on the evening of the event.
This event will have live subtitles provided by StageTEXT, delivered by MyClearText.
As tickets are free, people sometimes book and don't attend, so we have to issue more tickets than there are seats available to allow for this. Entry into the event is on a first-come, first-served basis and we recommend arriving in good time to avoid any disappointment.
