Delivered by the most outstanding academics in the UK and beyond, the British Academy’s flagship lecture
programme showcases the very best scholarship in the humanities and social sciences.
The events of the last few years have undoubtedly stretched our public services to breaking point and the impact on our education system has been particularly acute. With pressures on the public finances from all sides, shorter-term imperatives end up taking priority. Yet without the necessary long-term investment in our education and skills system, the health, wealth and indeed happiness of the UK is at risk. Certainly, we will not succeed in boosting our productivity levels nor are we likely to remain a research superpower. So how can we avoid undervaluing the skills and talent we need to succeed?
Speaker: Professor Anna Vignoles FBA, Director of the Leverhulme Trust
Anna Vignoles is Director of the Leverhulme Trust: one of the largest research funders in the UK. An education economist and previously a Professor at the University of Cambridge, her research focuses on the relationship between educational achievement and social mobility and the role played by skills in the economy. She has been a Trustee of the Nuffield Foundation and Member of Council of the Economic and Social Research Council. She was elected to the British Academy in 2017.
This lecture will be chaired by Professor Yann Lebeau, University of East Anglia.
