Host Institution:

Department of Politics and International Relations, Goldsmiths, University of London

Biography:

Dr. José Neves is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of History of NOVA-FCSH, Lisbon. Since the start of his career Dr. Neves has been interested in exploring the ways Marxism has been used by Nationalism. He has conducted extensive research on the Portuguese communist movement, analysing the political, economic and cultural implications of the intersections between nation and class.

Dr. Neves has been committed to the study of African anti-colonialist leader Amílcar Cabral (1924-1973). While his concern with debates on nation and class partially explains this move, the main aim of this research is to contribute to a better understanding of the processes evolved in the making of modern political leadership.

By focusing on anticolonial dynamics related to the history of Portuguese colonialism, Dr. Neves’ project will contribute to widening the geographical scope of the agenda developed by Goldsmiths’ Centre for Postcolonial Studies.
