Visitors with mobility access requirements
Information regarding disabled parking spaces in Westminster can be found on the City of Westminster’s website.
The entrance to the Academy is not at street level. All visitors can access the building via:
- a short flight of stairs at No. 10 Carlton House Terrace
- lift from street level at No. 11 Carlton House Terrace
All rooms on the public floors of the British Academy (the ground and first floors) are fully accessible for wheelchair users and those who use mobility aids. However, due to the Grade I listing of the building, there are restrictions in place for those who use larger motorised or battery powered wheelchairs or vehicles. While the Academy has three lifts between the ground and the first floors, two of these can only accommodate standard wheelchairs due to their space and size, combined with their concertina doors and dual floor access points. The third lift, which serves the Wolfson Room and Music Room on the first floor, can accommodate larger motorised wheelchairs and vehicles. Access to other rooms on the first floor is however limited for those using these vehicles, with access dependent on room usage on this floor.
In the light of these restrictions, may we respectfully request that visitors, clients and organisations notify the British Academy about any mobility access requirements at the booking stage in order to ensure that we can accommodate all visitors to our premises.
Two accessible toilets are available on the ground floor.
Access for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing visitors
Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of the British Academy.
An induction loop system is in place in the Wolfson Room (you will need to switch your hearing aid to the 'T' position). A portable induction loop is in place in the Lecture Room (users will need to use an app to access this; British Academy staff will assist visitors with this process. For those who do not have a smart phone, the Academy can provide an iPad to download this app).

Access for visitors with visual impairments
Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of the British Academy.
British Academy staff can reserve seats at the front of our lecture rooms for those who need to be within close proximity of a screen.
Facilities for families

All rooms on the public floors of the Academy are fully accessible for families with a buggy and there are three lifts between the ground and first floors.
Baby changing facilities are available on the ground floor.
The Academy has an unmanned cloakroom, where buggies can be left at the owner’s risk. Most Academy rooms are however large, and buggies can often be stored in the event space you are using.
British Academy staff can assist with room requests to breastfeed or express milk. Please contact the Academy in advance of your visit or speak to reception staff on the day.
