Singing Les Roastbeef: Comic English characters at the French music hall

In the glory years of the Parisian ‘café-concert’ music hall, one comedy character above all others was loved by French audiences: the Englishman. Hannah Scott introduces these roast beef-scoffing, beer-quaffing figures of fun from the nineteenth century.
