Graham Furniss: African Researcher Support for the Next Generation

Professor Graham Furniss FBA, Emeritus Professor of African Language Literature, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London

‘African Researcher Support for the Next Generation’

Recorded at the British Academy Soirée, Tuesday 28 June 2016

For nearly ten years the British Academy has worked with the Association of Commonwealth Universities to explore avenues for UK-African collaboration in research and to understand the impediments faced by African colleagues in doing research. Three reports have been published, The Nairobi Report (2009), Foundations for the Future (2011), and now The Next Generation (2016), which have moved to focus increasingly on the circumstances early-career researchers find themselves in, and to move from mostly debate and discussion to considering the implementation of recommendations from the earlier reports in the design of particular programmes and their outcomes, particularly in two DFID funded initiatives, the CIRCLE programme on climate change research, and the STARS programme on institutional support for researchers. The chair of the Academy’s Africa Panel, Professor Graham Furniss, speaks briefly about these initiatives and their implications.
